Seeing the LIght

It's a gloomy day here in Fargo, a day best spent indoors with the lights on.  Isn't it cozy, sitting at home during the day with the lights on?

Of all the things I will do to help reduce global warming, the one thing I just can't pull the trigger on is replacing my incandescent bulbs with fluorescents.  I can't even consider it without feeling the world as I know it will end and I will never be comfortable again.

When I was a kid, the happiest place on earth wasn't in California or Florida.  It was a farmhouse outside of Starkweather, ND.  It was a big old house built by my great grandfather when he homesteaded, the finest home for miles around.  My grandparents moved their family to the house in the 50's.  While I was growing up we lived only 30 miles away so visited often.  One of my most enduring memories is of the quality of the light in that old house. the warm light from incandescent bulbs.  More than anything, it means home.  So far, the only way to have that same warm light is to use the same outdated energy hog incandescent light bulbs Grandma used, so I do.  I don't think Grandma ever used anything brighter than a 40 watt bulb, I can't quite do that, I'd never be able to see a thing.  I keep a nice selection of different wattage bulbs in a basket in the mudroom.  That way our house is bright, but has that warm glow.

The day will come when energy efficient bulbs will be available that cast that comforting light, I don't believe I'm the only person attached to my light bulbs.  Or am I?

Life is a warm bright house on a rainy day is bliss.

Tricky Duck Tip:  Keep light bulbs, extension cords and other electrical gadget type stuff together.
